What is Genre?

Genre is a category that describes a type of reading, movie, or music. Previous experiences that have led me to this definition would be class room teachings, buying books at the book fair based on the genres they’re in, and listening to different genres of music. Hearing the word be used on television and in class, I developed a consensus of what the word means, aside from text book definition.

Genre is used to guide the reader and help them predict what might happen. If someone likes romance articles, then that genre helps let them know that things that they like to see might take place. In that genre one can expect to see falling in love, a person or reason they can’t be together, and how they overcome that. Genre can also be used to guide parents on whats appropriate for their kids.
