What Is Writing, And Who Am I As A Writer

Writing is the expression of ideas and feelings by means of letters and words. There are many ways that this is done. Some people use humor and/satire, while others take a more serious, literal approach.

I am more impartial to the comedic approach to writing. However, as a writer I steer more towards the serious tone. As a writer, I write about my thoughts, what I feel, and things around me. I adore poetry, but I rarely write poetry. The rhythm distracts from serious content, and works better for emotional and environmental content, in my opinion.

In Chapter 1 of Writing Studies Primer, there weren’t a lot of strategies listed. There were many examples of questions writers should be asking themselves while/before writing. This chapter was mostly about writing and the individual as a writer. There were some tips, such as research integrity and information on the importance of writing. There were more strategies and examples in Chapter 2. I did glance at some of the examples and strategies.

As a writer, I do not use many strategies. I try to begin with brainstorming topics. Once I’ve decided on a topic, I decide on subtopics. I ask myself things questions like: “What can I say about this topic?”, “How many things can I say about this topic?”, and “How many things can I say about each subtopics?” Then, I put them in order based upon what I call a “flow.” I have to be able to create several transitional sentences for the end of each paragraph. This creates the “flow.”

Writing has taken a diminished role in my current life. Writing is not necessary for a lot of my classes anymore and I find myself having less time for writing. Most of my writing is either for this class or for my Psych 2001C class. Weekly, I complete an APA format write – up of my lab results. It’s not hard and it doesn’t consist of any literary devices. Basically, I am writing numbers and values.

In my early life, I wrote all the time. I wrote stories, poems, and interesting facts that I read. I found writing fun and something to keep me occupied. Writing was more prevalent for me in school at that time, because I was still learning how to write. Now, writing is less about words or sentences that make sense, but more about style and technique. Professors are not teaching spelling, but they are teaching rhetoric, archetypes vs stereotypes, character development, and different ways to describe the same situations or topics.

Writers are able to utilize these techniques and cover a broad spectrum of topics. Everyone writes and everyone has potential to be a writer however, everyone is not a writer. Some people posses skills that others do not have. Writing comes naturally to writers, while others have to work and strive to develop the associated skills. Associated skills are: the ability to explain your thoughts, the ability to communicate with a broad spectrum of people, and the ability to keep the reader interested. Depending what you’re and where your writing will be, deciphers who you will most likely be talking to. This will allow you to pick formats and language that those readers are impartial towards. I know this from previous class discussions and being a reader myself. The same way different crowds choose different music to listen to or different comedy to watch, they choose their genres of writing the same way. When you think of musicians and comedians, they all do the same thing, just in a different manner. Therefore, when an audience is choosing their entertainment, they are mainly choosing the way they want to be communicated with.

When I am the writer, I hate writing when the topic has been picked for me. I love writing when I am given freedom of topic and style. I can still be satisfied if style is picked for me as long as the topic is of my choosing. For me it is difficult to write about a topic that I either know nothing about or am not interested in. If I am given a topic I know very little about, as long as the topic is interested, then I will enjoy learning about the topic. Me liking a topic that was chosen for me, is very unlikely.
